Health Testing for the German Shepherd
“Health tested” and “Grand Champion” are some of the most overused claims in this breed, used loosely, and often without the depth or verification they imply.
Hips, Elbows & (new recommendation) Spine. Just as important as the tests themselves is who is certifying them. SV (Germany) – the gold standard Issued through the German registry and required for breeding under SV rules. Ratings include:
Normal (a1)
Fast Normal (a2)
Noch Zugelassen (a3)
Orthopedic Foundation for Animals (United States) Public database used for verification. Ratings include: Excellent / Good / Fair (passing) What to look for: Final certifications (not prelims), done at 24+ months of age.
DNA & Genetic Screening Used to identify inherited risks and confirm genetic clarity. Specifically looking at the gene for Degenerative Mylopathy.
Temperament Testing SV(Germany), USCA (United Schutzhund Club of America) or AKC.
Proven Dogs & Requirement
In the world of canine breeding, a dog’s pedigree is more than just a record of ancestry; it’s a vital tool that encapsulates a lineage of traits, characteristics, and qualities that shape the future of the breed.
Germany maintains the most structured and regulated breeding system for the German Shepherd Dog and is the only country that enforces these requirements prior to breeding.
Under the German SV system, dogs are required to fulfill evaluations involving before legible to breed:
- SG & above show ratings (Structure and movement)
- IGP working titles
- KKL breed surveys (Breed suitability)
- Hip & Elbow certifications
- Temperament
- Minimum age of 20 months before breeding
Dogs being evaluated by qualified professionals is an important part of being an ethical breeder.
All of this contributes to more predictable outcomes in areas such as hips and elbows, clear-minded temperaments, overall stability, and even reducing risks of health issues that may not yet have genetic testing available at this time.
Why We Import from Germany
Germany maintains the most structured and regulated system for the German Shepherd Dog, requiring health testing, working titles, and breed surveys before breeding. While German Shepherds are bred throughout Europe and the United States, these requirements are not consistently enforced outside of Germany. In addition to consideration of living conditions requirements. Importing from Germany allows us to build our program on a proven and verifiable foundation.
Breeding Decisions
A dog can look impressive on paper, but the ultimate test is living with that dog over time. That tells far more about true character, nerve, stability, and suitability for the next generation.
This is why I only breed dogs trusted within my own family as companions first.
What separates breeding programs is not just what they produce, but what they choose not to breed. The ability to retire breeding prospects that are not truly suited to contribute to the next generation is one of the most important & also hardest parts of choosing to be an ethical breeder.
Outside Stud Selection: When I do bring in an outside stud, it is never a random decision. I work with breeders I trust and place importance on how a dog actually lives day-to-day, including proper care and living conditions. Not just the stud dog’s pedigree. True character, stability, and suitability as an addition to my program require far more than a single breeding interaction could ever show.

The Golden Ridge Start
Puppies are raised in our home with a strong focus on early development, stability, and long-term success. From the beginning, we emphasize intentional exposure, structured socialization, grooming, crate introduction, recall foundations, and confidence-building experiences designed to help puppies transition successfully into family life.
The approach combines proven genetics with thoughtful raising practices to build a strong foundation during the most important developmental stages of a puppy’s life.
